“VanderMeer is a marvelous craftsman. Every word feels carefully chosen; every sentence has a purpose; every plot point causes ripples...” —Booklist
Called the “King of Weird Fiction” by The New Yorker, acclaimed author and environmental advocate Jeff VanderMeer has drawn comparisons to Borges, Kafka, and Thoreau for his lyrical, genre-blurring work. He achieved international renown for his NYT-bestselling Southern Reach series, which has been translated into over 37 languages. The series’ first novel, Annihilation, won the Nebula Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and was adapted into a film starring Natalie Portman in 2018. Absolution, the fourth Southern Reach novel, is one of the most anticipated of the year, as noted by The New York Times, Washington Post, New York Magazine, TIME, Kirkus, Literary Hub, Goodreads, and NPR.
VanderMeer is also the author of Hummingbird Salamander and the Borne novels (Borne, The Strange Bird, and Dead Astronauts), which are being developed into a TV series by AMC. He has spoken at MIT, Columbia, Yale, Vanderbilt, Copenhagen’s BLOOM Festival, and has given the John Hersey Memorial Address at the Key West Literary Seminar.
Jeff frequently speaks about issues related to the environment, climate change, and storytelling. He has taught at the Yale Writers’ Conference and the Miami International Book Fair, among many others, and was the 2016-2017 Trias Writer-in-Residence at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in upstate New York. His nonfiction has appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, the Nation, Esquire, TIME, Current Affairs, Vulture, and the Los Angeles Times. He was a 2019 National Book Award judge for fiction and previously served as a judge for the Eisner Awards, the World Fantasy Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award, among others.
Jeff grew up in the Fiji Islands and spent six months traveling through Asia, Africa, and Europe before returning to the United States, which deeply influenced his fiction. He started writing at age eight, publishing his first short story at age 14. Currently, Jeff splits his time between Florida and Portland, Oregon.
