Sloane Crosley

“Being a writer is an endless study in human transition and lessons learned or forgotten or misapplied.”

Down Arrow

“Sloane Crosley is another mordant and mercurial wit from the realm of Sedaris and Vowell. What makes her so funny is that she seems to be telling the truth, helplessly.” —Jonathan Lethem

Sloane Crosley is a fiercely funny, bestselling author and essayist whose humor is lively and genuine. She is a relentless comedic force who the New York Times called, “an incisive observer of human nature.” Her memoir, Grief is for People, was a Time Top 10 Nonfiction Book of 2024, a NYT Editors’ Choice, and an NPR Best Book of 2024, among other accolades.

Sloane Crosley is the author of NYT bestselling books Grief is for People, I Was Told There’d Be Cake (a 2009 finalist for The Thurber Prize for American Humor), How Did You Get This Number, and Look Alive Out There (a 2019 finalist for The Thurber Prize for American Humor), as well as novels, The Clasp and Cult Classic.

Her latest work, Grief Is For People, swept 2024’s Best of the Year lists. Of the collection, John Mulaney writes, “[It] captures the feeling of watching a beloved, inappropriate and wild person fit less and less with the times we live in. Like Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking or Defoe’s Journal of A Plague Year, Grief Is for People takes us through the ordinary, awful and never-quite-ending experience of loss. It also made me laugh very hard, many times. I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Sloane’s work appears in The Village Voice, Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Esquire, The Independent, Departures, Black Book, The New York Observer, and elsewhere. Among other accolades, she was named a 2025 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and a 2018 Yaddo Fellow. Sloane has been an adjunct professor in Columbia and the New School’s MFA programs, as well as a guest lecturer at Dartmouth College, The Yale Writers’ Workshop, The School of Visual Arts, New York University and Bowdoin College.

She lives in New York City.
