Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah is a fearless and brilliant essayist and cultural critic. In 2018, she won a Pulitzer Prize for her profile of white supremacist and mass murderer Dylann Roof.
In 2014, Rachel’s essay about the elusive comedian Dave Chappelle, “If He Hollers Let Him Go,” was nominated for a National Magazine Award. Rachel’s writing has appeared in The Paris Review, The New York Observer, Bookforum, Transition, Rolling Stone, and The Best Music Writing of 2012. The editors at Brooklyn Magazine said of Rachel’s writing, “if we wanted to compile a reading list of the best journalism in the last couple of years, we’d begin with basically all the work of Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah.”
Rachel has garnered recognition for her longform profiles of subjects such as Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chirlane McCray, and Toni Morrison—which Flavorwire recommended as “necessary, even recuperative.” She has taught at Columbia University, Bard College, and Eugene Lang College.
She’s currently working on her first book, The Explainers and the Explorers, which will cover 400 years of African-American history.
