“I regularly turn to Lyz Lenz for writing that is incisive, funny, and compellingly furious.” —Rebecca Traister
According to Bitch Magazine, Lyz Lenz is a “writer on a roll.” A celebrated journalist and memoirist, her tough questions have rankled powerful men on both sides of the aisle: Joe Biden once called her “a real sweetheart” (sarcastically) and Alan Dershowitz once called her “fifth rate” (we disagree).
Lyz’s first book, God Land: A Story of Faith, Loss, and Renewal in Middle America (Indiana University Press, 2019), has been called “courageous,” “sharp,” and “compelling.” Her second book, Belabored: A Vindication of the Rights of Pregnant Women (Bold Type Books, 2020), an irreverent defense of the autonomy, rights, and dignity of pregnant people, was hailed by TIME for its “wit and deadly seriousness.” Her latest, This American Ex-Wife: How I Ended My Marriage and Started My Life, was published in 2024. Author Rebecca Solnit praises the memoir as “…a bomb, a bouquet (but not in a wedding bouquet), a memoir, a manifesto, and a total joy to read.”
Lyz’s writing has appeared in the Huffington Post, The Washington Post, the Columbia Journalism Review, The New York Times, Pacific Standard, and others. Her essay “All the Angry Women” was included in the anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture, edited by Roxane Gay. She writes a regular newsletter, Men Yell at Me, where she explores the intersection of politics and our bodies in red state America.
Lyz received her MFA in creative writing from Lesley University and lives in Iowa with her two kids and two dogs and one cat.
